Since last August, an interfaith team from People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond has been working with people from various faith communities. From the beginning, our goal has been to do something new about racism. After months of meetings, a public gathering took place February 28, 2019 at Marble Collegiate Church. At that gathering, nearly 100 people from a variety of religious communities said “YES” to the idea of a new Faith-Based Anti-Racism Coalition.
Now We’re Moving On To The Next Step
On this coming May 14, 2019 at the Fourth Universalist Church we will be a gathering for the official launching of the new Faith- Based coalition.
At this gathering, we will discuss and vote on:
- Recommendations for a year-long process of coalition building.
- Clear principles for defining our interfaith anti-racism mission.
- An effective structure to support and guide the process of building and shaping anti-racist religious communities and a powerful and influential coalition
- A budget for one year, based on anticipated funding grants and our own contributions
We will decide on the role we want to play in the coalition-building work and the future of our coalition.
Whether you’re someone whose been part of the organizing during the past year, or whether you are brand new and joining us for the first time, he is a short version of what you need to know about this New Coalition and this Launching Event: (the longer version will be in the mail next week, with all the recommendations that will be presented for approval on May 14th)
We’re an Interfaith Coalition . . . inviting all religious communities, congregations and institutions to work together
We’re an Anti-Racism Coalition . . . with a shared understanding of systemic racism and a shared commitment to organizing to end racism
Our Focus is Inward . . . we’re committed to building unambiguous and uncompromising anti-racist religious communities.! We cannot change the world if we do not begin with ourselves.
Our Focus is Outward . . . we’re committed to effectively using collective power to address societal issues of racism – prison reform, immigration, education, health care, etc.
We are Building for the Long-Term, and we are looking forward to seeing you!
